A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings
 
Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of August 2/3, 2014
In today’s Gospel we find an equation the disciples of Jesus couldn’t solve: Five loaves and two fish divided by 5,000-plus people. They failed to recognize Jesus in the equation; that whatever they had to offer, Jesus could take it and bless it and satisfy the hunger of the crowd with it. Good stewards recog­nize that the Lord can work miracles with the gifts they offer to a hungry and broken world. How often are we willing to offer our gifts in faith, even as insignificant as we think they are, and count on the Lord to do the rest? How often do we count Christ into the equation?
 
Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of August 9/10, 2014
Today’s Gospel reveals what miraculous things can happen when one embraces a single-minded faith in Jesus Christ. Pe­ter gets out of a wind-tossed boat when the Lord calls him. His faith is tested by his obedience to Jesus who is calling him out onto the water. In the midst of the waves and the wind, Peter gets out of the boat and walks toward Jesus. Good stewards heed Christ’s call to them. Sometimes that call directs them to take on seemingly impossible challenges. This week, reflect on how the Lord could be calling you out of the safety of your own “boat” to take on the impossible.
 
Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of August 16/17, 2014
In today’s first reading, the Lord speaks through the prophet Isaiah during a time of political dissolution and moral de-cline. The prophet had warned of God’s judgment against people for the feelings of self-importance they found in their possessions, and condemned them for various forms of economic injustice such as exploiting the poor and immi­grants. Good stewards know that Isaiah’s message is as com­pelling today as it was in the time of the kingdom of Judah: Do the right thing. Offer justice and compassion toward oth­ers. Be honest in all your dealings. And remember to observe the day of the Lord.
 
Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of August 23/24, 2014
Saint Paul reminds us in today’s second reading that the ul­timate origin of everything is God. Since everything comes from God, we are God’s own. We can never put God in our debt. There is absolutely no negotiating with God. Every breath we take is a gift. Every good deed we perform is grace.
Good stewards realize they are created and called to make the beauty, greatness, compassion and justice of God and his gifts known throughout the world. The stewardship ques­tion for us is whether we are willing to embrace this call, acknowledge our dependence on God and give our lives over to him completely for this purpose.
 
Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of August 30/31, 2014
In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus brings up the topic of the cross to his followers. They would not realize the cross was part of God’s plan and was to be their legacy until after the Resurrection. Today’s followers of Christ recognize they are stewards of his entire legacy, including his cross; that through their mutual sacrifices God’s glory is revealed. They don’t live their life in Christ only when it is convenient for them. They make a decision to take up their cross and carry it, no matter what the cost. What crosses do we bear in order to reveal God’s glory?

Algunos pensamientos sobre corresponsabilidad en las lecturas del domingo
 
Domingo Décimo Octavo del Tiempo Ordinario Fin de Semana del 2/3 de Agosto de 2014
En el Evangelio de hoy, nosotros encontramos una ecuación que los discípulos de Jesús no pudieron resolver: cinco panes y dos peces divididos entre 5,000 o más personas. Ellos fallaron en reconocer a Jesús en la ecuación; ya que, cualquier alimento que ellos tuvieran para ofrecer, Jesús podía tomarlo, bendecirlo y satisfacer con él el hambre de la multitud. Los buenos corresponsables reconocen que el Señor puede obrar milagros con los dones que ellos ofrecen a un mundo hambriento y lastimado. ¿Con qué frecuencia estamos dispuestos a ofrecer nuestros dones en la fe, aun cuando pensemos que son insignificantes, y dejamos que el Señor haga el resto? ¿Con qué frecuencia consideramos a Cristo dentro de la ecuación?
 
Domingo Décimo Noveno del Tiempo Ordinario Fin de Semana del 9/10 de Agosto de 2014
El Evangelio de hoy revela que cosas milagrosas pueden suceder cuando se abraza una fe fundamentada en Jesucristo. Pedro sale de la barca en medio de la tempestad cuando el Señor le llama. Su fe es puesta a prueba por su obediencia a Jesús, quien le llama a salir al agua. En medio de las olas y el viento, Pedro sale de la barca y camina hacia Jesús. Los buenos corresponsables prestan atención al llamado de Cristo. Algunas veces ese llamado les dirige a tomar desafíos aparentemente imposibles. Esta semana, reflexiona acerca de cómo el Señor podría estar llamándote a salir de la seguridad de tu propia “barca” para dar lugar a lo imposible.
 
Domingo Vigésimo del Tiempo Ordinario Fin de Semana del 16/17 de Agosto de 2014
En la primera lectura de hoy, el Señor habla a través del profeta Isaías, durante un tiempo de disolución política y decadencia moral. El profeta advirtió acerca del juicio de Dios contra la gente por los sentimientos de orgullo que sentían en sus posesiones, y les condenó por las diversas formas de injusticia económica, tales como la explotación a los pobres e inmigrantes. Los buenos corresponsables saben que el mensaje de Isaías es tan persuasivo hoy como lo fue en el tiempo del reino de Judá: Haz lo correcto. Muestra justicia y compasión hacia otros. Se honesto en todos tus tratos, y recuerda observar el día del Señor.
 
Domingo Vigésimo Primero del Tiempo Ordinario Fin de Semana del 23/24 de Agosto de 2014
San Pablo nos recuerda en la segunda lectura de hoy, que Dios es el origen definitivo de todo. En vista de que todo proviene de Dios, nosotros le pertenecemos. Nunca podemos poner a Dios en nuestra deuda. No hay en absoluto negociación con Dios. Cada respiración que tenemos es un don. Cada acto bueno que realizamos es una gracia.
 
Los buenos corresponsables saben que son creados y llamados para dar a conocer la belleza, la grandeza, la compasión y la justicia de Dios a través del mundo. La pregunta de corresponsabilidad para nosotros es, si estamos dispuestos a abrazar este llamado, a reconocer nuestra dependencia de Dios, y a dar nuestras vidas totalmente por este propósito.
 
Domingo Vigésimo Segundo del Tiempo Ordinario Fin de Semana del 30/31 de Agosto de 2014
En la lectura del Evangelio de hoy, Jesús menciona el tema de la cruz a sus seguidores. Ellos no sabían que la cruz era parte del plan de Dios y era su legado hasta después de la resurrección. Los seguidores de Cristo en nuestros días, reconocen que son corresponsables de su completo legado, incluyendo su cruz; que a través de sus sacrificios recíprocos la gloria de Dios es revelada. Ellos no viven su vida en Cristo sólo cuando es conveniente para ellos. Ellos toman la decisión de llevar su cruz y cargarla, sin importar cuál sea el costo. ¿Qué cruces soportamos para revelar la gloria de Dios?
