As the principal notary of the diocese, the Chancellor establishes the authenticity and validity of specified diocesan juridical acts, the manner in which they are documented and the manner in which the documentation that is produced will be maintained, protected and secured. In some cases, this includes the preservation of confidentiality.
The Chancellor ensures that the administrative and judicial acts of the diocese are gathered, arranged, safeguarded and preserved in the diocesan archives. Among the administrative acts of the diocese are the sacramental records. Among the judicial acts of the diocese are the decisions that have been made in the Diocesan Tribunal.
The Chancellor, as the bishop’s delegate, also serves the Church community through the administration of requests for dispensation regarding the Sacrament of Matrimony.
